Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel Wanting to Start Repairing
Jake’s 58 Casino Hotel is patiently waiting to launch its first major expansion of over $200 million and add a video lottery terminal. However, Suffolk OTB, the owner of Game Amenities, must first sign a bill by Gov. Cathy Hochul to increase the maximum VLT capacity from 1,000 to 2,000.
In 2013, the state administration passed a bill that would allow off-track betting companies to introduce terminals such as slots on their sites. After this news Suffolk OTB partnered with Delaware North to transform the former Marriott Hotel into Jake’s 58th. The latter opened in 2017 as VLT, which brought a lot of revenue to the company and region.
But for Long Island casinos to proceed with innovative expansion plans, Governor Hocheol must first act on Congress Bill 2210/Senate Bill 7685 which was passed by the New York State Legislature in June 2022, but was not passed to the governor’s office until December 16, 2022.
At the end of the state’s legislative session, the governor can take 30 days of action on legislation after receiving it. This is longer than the 10 days a governor usually has on a bill if the legislature is in session. Now, after receiving the bill in mid-December, Hochul’s office will have time to sign the bill by 12:01 a.m. ET on Saturday, January 30, 2023.
If the VLT bill is enacted into law by the governor’s office, Suffolk OTB promises to expand by investing more than $200 million in Jake’s 58 casino hotel. The project is expected to include an additional 100,000 square feet of costs for the vacant property currently located at the back of the resort.
The expansion of the amenities will increase the number of VLT machines in the game property to about 2,000 units. In addition, the new building space will allow the launch of new restaurants, VIP game lounges and new parking lots. Much of the US$200 million budget will be used to renovate the resort’s 227 rooms.
In addition to the VLT hike, the state officially tracked licenses for three Downstate casinos earlier this year. Getting America Resort World New York City in Queens and MGM Resort’s Empire City Casino in Yonkers are among the three commercial licensing candidates, nearly two of the frontrunners in the bid.
The remaining candidates will compete with each other for a third license. One of the big potential bids to get it is a coalition of SL Green, Caesars Entertainment and Rock Nation that wants to bring land-based casinos to Times Square. Their bids were recently supported by local theater workers, musicians, small business owners, hotel operators and construction unions.
