Cho Jae-ho vs. Um Sang-pil, Gangdong Palace vs. Refence, Kim Ga-young vs. Kim Ye-eun, Han Ji-eun vs. Kim Min-ah

In the round of 16 of the 2023-2024 season’s “SK Rent-a-Car Jeju Special Self-Governing PBA-LPBA Championship” held at Halla Gymnasium in Jeju on the 14th, strong PBA players such as “defending champion” Cho Jae-ho (NH Nonghyup Card), Kang Dong-gung (SK Rent-a-Car), David Zapata (Spain, Blue One Resort), David Martinez (Spain, Crown Haitai) and Semi Seiginer (Turkeyye, Huons) advanced to the quarterfinals. Cho gave up the first set to Kim Byung-ho (Hana Card), but managed to secure the second to fourth sets in succession. In the second set, Cho won the game 15-10 (11 innings) by banking on eight high-run points. In the third and fourth sets, Cho advanced to the quarterfinals by winning 15-7 (seven innings) and 15-9 (five innings), respectively.

Kang came from behind to win against Rupee Chenet by banking on his 17 bank shots. He won the first set by 15-6 (seven innings), but lost the second and third sets by 7-15 (eight innings) and 12-15 (eight innings). However, he turned the game to square one by setting the fourth set by 15-6 (six innings), and won the fifth set by 15-8 (five innings) in five innings.

Eddie Refens recorded an average of 3.750 against Hwang, continuing his third win in the group league. He scored 15 points in a row in the first inning of the first set to achieve “perfect cue,” marking his third perfect cue of the tournament and second PBA.

Martinez and Zapata advanced to the quarterfinals with two-point average against Marmin Gum (Vietnam, NH Nonghyup Card) and Nguyen Phuong Lin (Vietnam, Hiwon Resort), respectively. Seiginer and Park Ki-ho defeated Seo Hyun-min and Lee Sang-dae (Welcome Savings Bank) 3-2 after a neck-and-neck race in the fifth set, respectively.

The women’s LPBA was also hot. In a showdown between Kim Ga-young and Throne Piavi (Blue One Resort in Cambodia), which drew attention through “preview finals,” Kim avenged her loss in the final of last season’s World Championship with a set score of 3-1.

Kim had a high run of six points in the first set to gain the upper hand with 11-5 (five innings) and won the second set with 11-9 (10 innings), widening the gap. Kim lost the third set with 9-11 (17 innings), but won the fourth set with 11-5 in 10 innings.

In another round of 16, Lee defeated Kim Jin-ah (Hana Card) 3-1 in set score. Kim Min-ah also defeated Choi Yeon-ju 3-1. Han Ji-eun and Kim Gap-sun advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Seo Han-sol (Blue One Resort) and Lim Jeong-sook (Crown Haitai), 3-2, respectively.

Kim Bo-mi and Kim Se-yeon (Huons) won 3-1 against Jang Hye-ri and Kim Kyung-ja, respectively. Kim Ye-eun (Welcome Savings Bank) beat Natsumi Higashiuchi (Japan) 3-0.

The PBA quarterfinals will be contested by Zapata Martinez, Kang Dong-gung, Repence, Seginer, Park Ki-ho, Cho Jae-ho and Um Sang-pil, respectively. The quarterfinals of the LPBA consisted of a showdown between Kim Ga-young, Kim Ye-eun, Han Ji-eun, Kim Min-ah, Lee Mi-rae, Kim Se-yeon, Kim Bo-mi, and Kim Gap-sun.
