143 Cambodia Casino Annual License Application: Regulatory Agency

A total of 143 casinos in Cambodia have submitted their annual permit applications to the Cambodian gaming regulators. Ros Pirun, secretary-general of Cambodia’s Commercial Gambling Management Committee, told GGRAsia that only 13 permits have been issued so far this year.

“The Act on the Management of Commercial Gambling requires a minimum capital investment, and due to COVID-19, some licensees (in 2021) have decided not to reapply in 2022,” he said in a written response.

Cambodia has previously had more than 200 licensed casinos, according to Mr Rose.

The official added, “Almost all casinos continue to close. In 2022, 143 [re-applied for annual licenses]. They are in the process of getting licenses.”

Under new rules approved in 2020, casinos in Cambodia must renew their respective licenses each year.

Australian-listed casino operator Donaco International said last month that casino operations at Puypet’s Star Vegas club and casino on Cambodia’s Thai border would resume on June 18. The property was the company’s main source of revenue before the COVID-19 pandemic but had remained closed for more than two years.

“Donaco confirms that the Cambodian government and relevant local authorities have lifted the temporary closure of casino operations in Bantei Minchi province, where Star Vegas is located,” the casino company said at the time.

Nagakov, the operator of Naga World Casino Resort, Cambodia’s largest gaming property, confirmed to GGRA last month that it plans to launch a 20-table gaming zone aimed at “premium players for the public market” at the end of the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth quarter.

On Monday, Cambodian media outlet Phnom Penh Post reported that the country’s state revenue from commercial gambling in Cambodia in the first half of the year was just 8% of its annual target set at 174.2 billion KHR ($4.355 million). Most of that revenue came from lotteries and lotteries. The media quoted Mr. Pirun as saying that the improvement in casino total gaming revenue across the industry depends on the recovery of Cambodia’s tourism industry.
