Sri Lanka’s cabinet approves proposal to set up game regulator

Sri Lankan ministers approved a draft bill this week to establish a gambling regulator, a government statement cited by local media said.

The government reportedly said the purpose of establishing a regulator for the industry was to ensure adequate collection taxes from gambling venues, prevent illegal activities related to gambling and minimise the negative impact of gambling.

The new legislation is likely to include a fee for admission to gambling venues, media said.

The Cabinet approved issuing casino licenses to the country’s existing game operators last year. In 2010, a law regulating casinos was passed and required gaming facilities to issue licenses, but the necessary regulations have not yet been announced and no permits have been issued.
