Korea’s Kangwon Land Spends US$4 Million On New Chips
Kangwon Land, the promoter of Kangwon Land (file photo), the only local casino resort that allows Koreans to gamble, plans to replace all casino chip stocks by next year.
Several local media reported this week that Kangwon Land announced plans to spend 5.7 billion won ($4.38 million) to produce 631,200 new casino chips by 2024.
Reports said it would be the third time in 20 years that casino chips used in the building would be “gradually abolished and discarded.” But unlike the partial replacement exercises in 2008 and 2010, all chips would eventually be replaced this time.
Considering the resort’s high use of chips, hygiene was one reason mentioned. Its low-labeled chips have been in use since 2003, when Kangwon Land’s main casino began operating. Currently, there are more than 1 million chips issued by Kangwon Land.
The face value of the new chips will be W5,000, W10,000, W10,000 and W100,000. They will also include “advanced security technology,” the report said.
Kangwon Land Co., Ltd. posted a net loss of 5.85 billion won in the same period last year to a net profit of 101.54 billion won for its parent shareholders in the first quarter of 2023.
